Notepad Tricks

We have become so accustomed to the mouse that we do not realize how much it hinders our work. The keyboard on the other hand is more powerful than we realize. Like other computer tricks, there are many cool keyboard tricks to save your time and make you more productive.

The easiest is a list of Windows XP shortcuts. Some of these may also work in other applications.

 Windows XP

  • 1. [SHIFT] + [alt] + [PrntScrn] - high contrast

Doing so will open a window, click OK or simply hit [Enter]. This will enlarge the font on all open windows and change the colors to high contrast. Clicking on the same key combination again will reverse.

  • 2. [Ctrl] + [alt] + [up / down / left / right arrow] - rotate the screen

This keyboard trick does not work on every machine because it depends on your graphics card and video drivers. However, if it works, it will rotate your desktop.

  • 3. [Ctrl] + select item from taskbar, right-click on selected - large control open windows

For this trick, you have to keep the [Ctrl] key while selecting open windows from the taskbar. To open the menu seen on the left, right-click any selected item.

By this you can close a group of applications simultaneously or show them side by side or stacked or in cascades.

This cool keyboard trick can save tons of wasted time on rearranged windows.

  • 4. [Alt] + [Tab] - Switch between running programs

A small window will appear showing all open events. Click the [Tab] key to move to the next application, release the key to open the selected one.

  • 5. [SHIFT] + [Del] - Bypass Recycle Bin

Pressing the above combination to select a file will initiate a delete confirmation dialog. Clicking on Yes will delete the file without sending it to the Recycle Bin.

  • 6. [Windows] + [D] - Show desktop or restore open windows

This is the keyboard shortcut to the corresponding Quick Launch taskbar icon.

  • 7. [Windows] + [L] - Lock System

This is an easy way to quickly protect and lock your system. When you log back in, all programs will be running and windows will appear just as you left them.

  • 8. [Ctrl] + [Z] and [Ctrl] + [Y] - Undo and Redo

Maybe you all know that you can undo changes using the shortcut [Ctrl] + [Z]. It would be great to have this facility outside the computer. You can undo one, ie what you did using the [Ctrl] + [Y] key combination.
